This would be a perfect computer for Internet cafes in Third World countries like Rwanda.

Introducing.... DupyNews!

I try to make it a point to stay up with current events in the world.  To do this, I use Google Reader. While I am reading stories, I have the option of sharing the ones I like with the rest of the world. Conveniently, Google Reader create a web page with all of my shared stories for everyone to see. To read the news stories that have caught my eye lately, click on the following link:

Yesterday

Two things of interest from yesterday:

  1. Kristen got her braces off. I haven't seen her new pearly whites yet, but she's very pleased.
  2. I saw Courtney Yant at Hillside. Courtney went to elementary school with me and we haven't talked since fifth grade. It was fun to catch up with her.

Fuji Takes Third at EECS Poster Competition

Yesterday was a big day for Project Fuji, my senior design team whose task is to design a solar power generation scheme for a hospital in Abri, Sudan. It was the annual EECS Open House and Poster Competition. All of the senior design teams had posters and prototypes on display. They were viewed by the general public and judged by a panel. We ended up getting third place overall, which is especially notable considering our project budget (originally $0). This morning, a picture of me (which happens to feature Weston as well) was on the front page of the Evergreen. To see a couple pictures I took at the poster session, click here.

Platial.com

This is a very cool site, also very similar to what I'm working on for my human-computer interaction course.

Looking at the election

This is the best summary of the election that I've read so far.

East Timor struggles on - The Boston Globe
"peaceful but contentious first round of balloting"
Jose Ramos-Horta said, "More important than so-called issues of sovereignty and nationalism, for me, is that the common people are able to sleep in peace at night."

East Timor vs. New Zealand

This would be an interesting book to read.

Infoshop News - Review: Negligent Neighbour - New Zealand's Complicity in the occupation of East Timor

Between 1975 and 1999 the Indonesian Military is estimated to have killed 183,000 people in East Timor – nearly one third of the population.

Greater Sunrise

Looks like East Timor will become much more wealthy in the near future. Notice that they will "evenly split royalties" for the 8 trillion cubic feet of gas and 300 million barrels of condensate.

UPDATE 1-East Timor hopes for Greater Sunrise gas soon | Breaking City News | Reuters.co.uk
The $5 billion development of the Greater Sunrise gas fields in the Timor Sea may begin soon, senior officials said on Friday, as they press for building the bulk of the project onshore East Timor.

Nigeria Elections

This is a critical moment in Nigeria's history... I wonder if the UN or anybody else is monitoring the elections.

Governing party takes lead in Nigerian elections - International Herald Tribune
Saturday's chaotic elections for state lawmakers and governors present a challenge for Nigeria before a crucial April 21 presidential vote. That election should set up the country's first-ever handover of power between elected civilians and if the populace rejects it, Nigeria's democratic experiment could be imperiled.

Volunteerism Down

I'm looking for some kind of volunteer program or activity I can do this summer. Ideas, anyone?

Indexed

This a very cool blog. Every post is a graph or chart, hand-drawn on notebook paper. How do people think of things like this?

This site is a little project that lets me make fun of some things and sense of others. I use it to think a little more relationally without resorting to doing actual math.

Problems with the Elections

This is interesting, a couple of days ago everyone was saying it was a great election.

Asia Pacific - Programs - TIMOR: Presidential poll suffers from electoral fraud allegations
Complaints are flying thick and fast in East Timor that the Presidential election has suffered serious fraud. Virtually all of the eight presidential candidates have alleged serious counting irregularities or intimidation of voters in last Monday's ballot.

France shifts the blame

A French judge has just accused Rwandan leaders (who fought on the RPF side during the civil war) of shooting down the plane then-president Juvenal Habyarimana in 1994 to intentionally start the genocide. This seems ridiculous, especially after having read the eyewitness accounts of UN General Romeo Dallaire. In reality, France should be taking the blame for much of what happened.

FRANCE-RWANDA: War Shifts to the Tribunals
Dallaire believes that French officers also participated in skirmishes between the Rwandan army and the guerrillas. "In the days that followed the killing of Habyarimana, we saw Europeans soldiers wearing the Rwandan military uniform, taking part in manoeuvres," he had said in a statement made following the massacres.

Wow, this looks very similar to my original concept for my HCI project:

WFP Food Drop Picture

A great photo of a WFP food drop over Darfur. This can be seen in Google Earth by installing the US Holocaust Memorial overlay and searching for "Darfur."

Editorial about East Timor, elections, and ASEAN

Democracy fragile in E Timor

Indeed, it is time that Asean induct East Timor as its eleventh member.

There is no need to wait any longer to include the country. After all, Asean did not wait for the military junta in Burma to give way to democracy before admitting that country into the grouping in 1997. East Timor is a democratic country and Asean should provide it with assistance and organisational support. Ongoing Asean programmes with its dialogue partners would help East Timor to overcome its current problems.
