Two things of interest from yesterday:
Yesterday was a big day for Project Fuji, my senior design team whose task is to design a solar power generation scheme for a hospital in Abri, Sudan. It was the annual EECS Open House and Poster Competition. All of the senior design teams had posters and prototypes on display. They were viewed by the general public and judged by a panel. We ended up getting third place overall, which is especially notable considering our project budget (originally $0). This morning, a picture of me (which happens to feature Weston as well) was on the front page of the Evergreen. To see a couple pictures I took at the poster session, click here.
"peaceful but contentious first round of balloting"
Jose Ramos-Horta said, "More important than so-called issues of sovereignty and nationalism, for me, is that the common people are able to sleep in peace at night."
Between 1975 and 1999 the Indonesian Military is estimated to have killed 183,000 people in East Timor – nearly one third of the population.
The $5 billion development of the Greater Sunrise gas fields in the Timor Sea may begin soon, senior officials said on Friday, as they press for building the bulk of the project onshore East Timor.
Saturday's chaotic elections for state lawmakers and governors present a challenge for Nigeria before a crucial April 21 presidential vote. That election should set up the country's first-ever handover of power between elected civilians and if the populace rejects it, Nigeria's democratic experiment could be imperiled.

This site is a little project that lets me make fun of some things and sense of others. I use it to think a little more relationally without resorting to doing actual math.
Complaints are flying thick and fast in East Timor that the Presidential election has suffered serious fraud. Virtually all of the eight presidential candidates have alleged serious counting irregularities or intimidation of voters in last Monday's ballot.
Dallaire believes that French officers also participated in skirmishes between the Rwandan army and the guerrillas. "In the days that followed the killing of Habyarimana, we saw Europeans soldiers wearing the Rwandan military uniform, taking part in manoeuvres," he had said in a statement made following the massacres.

Indeed, it is time that Asean induct East Timor as its eleventh member.
There is no need to wait any longer to include the country. After all, Asean did not wait for the military junta in Burma to give way to democracy before admitting that country into the grouping in 1997. East Timor is a democratic country and Asean should provide it with assistance and organisational support. Ongoing Asean programmes with its dialogue partners would help East Timor to overcome its current problems.
